It’s hard to believe it’s been a year since we lost the amazing legend Robin Williams at the young age of 63. The world mourned the man who brought laughter to our lives when he passed and a year later his loss is still overwhelming.
Growing up with Williams, watching Mork and Mindy every week, hearing of the funny man’s death brought back a wave of memories. How could the man who made me laugh so in Mrs. Doubtfire, the man who introduced me to Ben Affleck and Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting, the man whose late night talk show appearances brought laughter to people everywhere be gone? Williams had a profound affect on many, myself included.
Choosing one of his movies as a favorite is virtually impossible but remembering some my favorite quotes from his movies and television series is easy, especially, “na nu, na nu,” from Mork and Mindy, the phrase my parents heard hundreds of times when I was growing up. Another favorite of mine, “Carpe. Hear it? Carpe. Carpe diem. Seize the day, boys. Make your lives extraordinary,” said by Williams when he played the character John Keating in Dead Poets Society. “Carpe diem. Seize the day,” is a phrase I have repeated over and over, remembering to be extraordinary, rather than ordinary. Finally, the phrase,“Our job is improving the quality of life, not just delaying death,” said by Patch Adams in the movie, Patch Adams, words that made the final months before my father passed away a bit easier to deal with the inevitable.
